Asian Approaches to Urban Challenges: Insight for the Public and Policy Makers

The University of San Francisco Center for Asia Pacific Studies is pleased to announce a call for papers for a special issue on Asian approaches to urban challenges to be published in its peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal, Asia Pacific Perspectives.

With this special issue, APP plans to examine issues related to Asian approaches to contemporary urban issues. This year we will be focusing on pressing issues of urbanization in 21st century East Asia (China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan) and their implications for policy in the United States. Our goal is to cultivate a discussion across the Pacific region on these important matters that have deep ramifications for US policy makers and public welfare.

Proposed themes include:

  • accessibility
  • carceral and penal policy
  • children and schooling
  • city diplomacy
  • commerce and tourism
  • crime and policing
  • drug policy
  • food
  • environmental issues
  • housing/homelessness
  • immigration
  • public health and hygiene
  • public transportation
  • race and ethnicity
  • waste management

DEADLINE: Review of submissions will begin on April 15, 2023.
To submit a paper: Email your documents electronically in MS Word or compatible format to perspectives@usfca.edu.

Submission Type

We welcome submissions in the form of:

  • full-length articles (8,000 and 12,000 words or approximately thirty-five pages max)
  • think pieces (3,000-5,000 words)
  • book reviews (700-1200 words)
  • photo-essays (1250-2000 words) of the above mentioned topics 
    • 10-15 high quality photos each with descriptive captions and complete credit/source information (as a single PDF)
    • Submissions will include a non-peer reviewed essay contextualizing the photographs in the text
    • a one-page description of the theme of the essay and the timeliness/importance of the images to scholars of Asia
    • a brief bio paragraph about the curator (approx 100 words) and complete contact information

Asia Pacific Perspectives (APP) (ISSN: 2167-1699) is an international, peer-reviewed electronic journal that promotes cross-cultural understanding, tolerance, and the dissemination of knowledge about the Asia Pacific. The editors welcome submissions from all fields of the social sciences and the humanities that focus on the Asia Pacific, especially those adopting a comparative, interdisciplinary approach to issues of interrelatedness in the region. The journal facilitates academic discussions among both established scholars in the field and advanced graduate students. APP is published twice each year by the University of San Francisco Center for Asia Pacific Studies.
